Forest Wars of the Haven
-
Description
Forest Wars of the Haven is a fantasy wargame based on the novel The Haven (later revised as Forest Wars) by Graham Diamond, the co-designer. The game depicts an assault by the Forces of Man (also called the Forces of the Haven), consisting of humans, wolves, hawks, and eagles, on the camp of the Forest Lords, who control dogs and bats.
The gameplay will be familiar to anyone who has played a grand tactical wargame. The system is fairly standard for the period, with some special rules for air support, charging units, and units which can be hidden or have variable loyalty.
Some judicious selections from an advertisement for the game (printed in Pursue & Destroy #17):
"Learning that Lord Toland is massing the creatures of the dark forest against them. THE HAVEN, last stronghold of mankind, launches a preemptive strike on Toland's camp in the Southern Forests.
Infantry, archers, rangers, and cavalry, including the dreaded Imperial Guard, march boldly to the forest along with their allies, the wolves under Dinjar the Red, and the winged warriors under Vandor, to end this threat to mankind's very existance! [sic]
But Toland's hoards [sic] are waiting with their awesome vampire bats."
"FOREST WARS is not a conventional wargame with fantasy trimmings It has been designed from the base up as [a] fantasy simulation and includes such refinements as a combat matrix, leaders, and moral. [sic]"
"There is no printing on the front of the box so as not to mar the reproduction of this original piece of art. [The ad includes the painting from the front.] The printing is on the back cover which has smaller full color original art. Compare the illustration above with what you find on other works. You will see the extra effort that went into this entire work."
