Description
Hoppaspelet (English, The Jump Game) is a Swedish children's game based on the book and cartoon "Flugsoppan". Every player takes on the role as young frogs that set out on a hunt for ant eggs. These eggs are to be used as the main ingredient in Mommy and Daddy Frogs' famous fly soup. The first player to return home with a jar 'o ant eggs wins.
The ant eggs are provided by the nabour "Herr Padda" (Mr Toad). When getting there you are just half way through, as you have to get back through all the dangers again.
When leaping along the board the players may get "Hoppakort" (Jump cards). These cards may provide extra leaps, or perhaps some bad luck for you. But more important they can make a change of the weather. The weather guids the amound of leaps every frog may take in each turn until there is another change in the weather. Bad weather such as rain and mist will give you a slower pace. Nice and shiny weather will provide the frogs a quicker move towards the aim of delivering the ant eggs.
This is perhaps one of the best childrens game ever made as adults will have just as fun. The design of the game is super. Note the trunks on the frogs!
Even if the game is simple to learn it has many depths of tactics. (Note also that the game board has hexagones in similarity with many tactical and strategic war games.) Will you take the long, but perhaps safer route or will you take a chanse to cross the lake? But to be able to cross the lake you need to get a suitcase first. (The game is developt from a cartoon movie and the little frog in that film happend to find a drifting suitcase.) But taking a suitcase ride may drift you to the waterfall and you will finally end up at the beach. So the walk became longer than you thougt! There are many other possible shortcuts that possibly can save time but also can delay you more than expected. You need to have some luck with the dice here. But even if you think you have cracked the tactics of the game, you may still lose. And lose badly! My four year old doughter win the game just as many times as my seven year old son or myself.
The dark blue and dark green hexes will provide you a "Hoppakort" (Jump card). Theese cards can take the game to unexpected turns. I.e. when you think you are at the end of the game and only a few hexes from victory - you lose your jar and you have to get back for another one... By chosing light blue or light green hexes you may avoid the bad lucks, but you will also for sure miss any positive events such as extra steps.
If you "stumble" upon a cat, he will follow you and protect you from dangers.
